Wing Commander Jon Osborne joined the Royal Air Force in 1984 as a propulsion technician, before moving the following year to 74(F) Squadron, equipped with the Phantom aircraft. In 1992 he was selected for commissioning and a University Cadetship to study for a BEng in aeromechanical engineering. Following initial officer and specialist engineer training in 1996, where he won the British Aircraft Corporation Trophy and the Halahan Trophy, his first tour was as Junior Engineer Officer on the Tornado Weapons Conversion Unit at Royal Air Force Lossiemouth. A posting to Royal Air Force Bruggen followed as Officer Commanding Tornado Propulsion Flight before returning to the UK in 2000 to become the Lifing Manager and Deputy Engineering Authority (EA) for the RB199 engine.

Promoted to squadron leader in 2002, his next appointment was as the EA for Tornado General Systems, where he held responsibility for the airworthiness, availability and financial aspects of this equipment for the Tornado Fleet. During this time he became a Chartered Engineer and studied part time for an MBA (Defence) before being selected to contribute to the development of the whole engine support contract for the RB199. Appointed to command the engineering elements of XV(R) Squadron in 2004, Jon returned to Lossiemouth before an operational tour within the Air Component Head Quarters on Operation TELIC beckoned. He was subsequently posted in April 2006 to the Logistics Support Centre at Air Command, responsible for deployment planning and sustainment for operations.

In March 2007 he was promoted to wing commander and posted to Loughborough University as Commanding Officer Typhoon Squadron on the Defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme, responsible for the development of 145 student engineer and logistics officers destined to join one of the three Services or MOD Civil Service. In July 2009 Jon was selected for the Advanced Command and Staff Course, where he completed an MA in Defence Studies, before being selected as the Military Assistant to Chief of Materiel (Air), the Royal Air Force’s Chief Engineer. In August 2011, Wing Commander Osborne made a welcome return to the front line as Officer Commanding Engineering and Logistics Wing, Royal Air Force Marham.

Jon is married with two children. He is interested in most sports, including rugby and squash. He is a unit expedition leader and glider pilot, and hopes to qualify as a day skipper during his current tour at Marham.
