Camp Beaumont Report and Photos
RAF Marham Youth trip to Camp Beaumont in May 2007 - Report and Photos
On the 30th May 2007 Rita Broomfield, RAF Marham’s Community Development Officer, took a group of children for a challenging day at Camp Beaumont located on the Norfolk Coast. The children’s ages ranged between 7 and 15 years old.
The coach departed at 07:30 am and the children’s spirits were high as they excitedly discussed all the activities they were looking forward to. On reaching their destination the group was met by the very enthusiastic Camp Beaumont staff. The sense of adventure was prominent in the air as the children were divided into two groups. Refreshments were provided, toilet stops were made and it was time for the activities to begin.
The first activity for the younger group was archery, whilst the older group took on the challenging climbing walls and then after an hour the groups swapped. Archery was a great success with all the arrows heading in the right direction. There were some surprising results too, as the naturals to the art of archery were found in the younger girls. The climbing wall was a hit with all and for many this was one of the highlights of the day. The older group made it appear easy with Ben and Connor rapidly accelerating up the vertical climbing wall, as did Blair from the younger group. Some of the younger children were very apprehensive about attempting the climbing wall, which challenged their boundaries, but with encouragement from the staff and their group all the children endeavoured to meet the challenge of the wall. The youngest member of the group, Rachel, showed what the day was about as she went happily from challenge to challenge and let nothing get in her way.
The next activity planned had been caving, but this was abandoned as the caves were filled with water from two days heavy rainfall. Shona would have been prepared for this activity, water or no water, with her Mary Poppins style bag that contained everything for every occasion. Yet, as the sunshine was out the activity was replaced by aero ball. This involved the children bouncing on trampolines and throwing the ball into a net. This activity was a lot more strenuous than it appeared. The overall champions of this activity were Ben, Drew and Jenna-Jaye but the staff showed them that they were the real experts at this game and had had lots of practice. After all the mornings activities the children had worked up quite an appetite and were soon devouring the food provided in the canteen.
After refuelling the children were soon ready for the afternoon activities, which were Quad Biking, the Laser Quest and the Zip Wire. The Zip Wire was another adrenalin filled activity. The children climbed a high tower to reach the Zip Wire, an instructor then safely attached them to the wire and then they stood on the edge ready to jump. Although many found standing on the edge a very scary experience, once they jumped and were flying along the zip line, their fear soon turned into exhilaration. After all these activities the children were ready for more food in the canteen. It had been hoped to have a barbeque but the ominous black clouds put stop to this.
The day was ended by an evening of karaoke, which the children enthusiastically undertook. The event was started by a very brave Summer singing ‘Faith’ by George Michael and soon all the children were in full singing voice. The battle was to actually get the microphone off them. The winner of the karaoke battle was….., and it was surprising that his voice held out as he had been singing ‘Doe a Deer’ non-stop all day. Karaoke had to come to an end, as it was soon time to climb on board the coach and head home. The majority of children carried on the singing all the way home, all but Shona and Megan who were sound asleep. The children were safely returned to the Sandringham Centre Car Park by 10:00 pm.
The day had been highly rewarding and challenging and was enjoyed by all, with the children eager to return in the future.
