Schoolboy Christopher Vear (10) from Swaffham, joined Polly Vachers at Royal Air Force Marham on Thursday 5th July for the trip of a lifetime as Polly flew around the country in her quest with “ Wings Around Britain” charity appeal in aid of “Flying Scholarships for the Disabled” .

The Charity “Wings Around Britain” approached Squadron Leader “Rem” Merrick,  the Media and Communication Officer, and offered a flight space from Marham to Fenland.

Christopher, who has a muscle wastage disorder, and has close associations with both II (AC) and 39 (1 PRU) Squadron (now disbanded) and the Station itself, seemed the ideal candidate.

Christopher along with his parents David and Jackie first met with Officer Commanding IX (B) Squadron Wing Commander Dave Waddington for coffee in the Officers Mess before going to the airfield to board the plane, a Piper Dakota PA28. In a late development it was found there to be enough room for the whole family to travel and much excitement prevailed.

Speaking with Christopher and his parents after the flight, they all described it as ‘awesome’ and Polly as “amazing” as she had explained about the charity that had been started by Douglas Bader and how all the monies earnt from her books went straight back to the charity. Christopher was very happy if a little tired and hungry and looking forward to returning to school to share his experience with his friends.
