RAF Marham SAC receives a GEMS Award of £3,760

SAC Quilter was employed in the Tyre Bay RAF Marham at the time of submitting the GEMS. In the course of his duties he was involved with the maintenance of the Tornado Brake Piston Assemblies. He soon became aware of the increasing number of occasions where the pistons had to be replaced because the technicians were unable to service the component parts due to the fact that a circlip, which held all the component parts together, could not be removed. SAC Quilter knew that the Tyre Bay at RAF Marham alone had 150 unserviceable Brake Pistons, which could possibly have been recovered if the circlips could be removed. He decided that this situation was not cost effective and designed a tool to enable the removal of the circlip, thus allowing the pistons to be serviced.

SAC Quilter’s suggestion was authorised by the Tornado IPT, who arranged manufacture of 15 tools at a cost of £1,087. The estimated savings over 3 years is calculated at £83,265. SAC Quilter’s suggestion was passed from the RAF Service Award Group to the MoD Main Award Group who also awarded SAC Quilter.

In total SAC Quilter has been awarded £3,760 for his suggestion.
