RAF Marham Personnel compete in the Great North Run
20 RAF Marham personnel are going for a run………13.1 miles to be exact!
Applying to run a Half Marathon is the first huge step, the second being the gruelling 4 months training before the event, running it is the easy part!
Last year 16 personnel took part in the Great North Run in Newcastle on the 30 September 2006 raising £4,800. This year we aim to raise £6,000 bringing our station total to over £10,000 for Leonard Cheshire, our chosen charity.
Leonard Cheshire exists to change attitudes to disability and to serve disabled people around the world. Their principal activity in the UK is the provision of services in support of disabled people in the widest context. These services include care homes, supported living, domiciliary support, day services, resource centres, rehabilitation, respite care, personal support and training and assistance for those looking for work. They operate in all parts of the UK and are the largest voluntary sector provider of care and support services for disabled people.
The core areas of their work include:
1. Inclusive Education- promoting disabled children's right to a meaningful education.
2. Livelihoods programmes- to enable people with disabilities to become independent.
3. Health & Rehabilitation
4. Support to everyday living and
5. Training and research in post conflict and post- disaster countries
The Sandringham Estate is our nearest Leonard Cheshire hotel and is specifically for disabled people and their families. 1,550 people stayed at the Park House Hotel last year, a huge amount being ex service personnel.
Some of the runners were unable to be available for the photograph due to work commitments. The group consists of all ranks from SAC to Wing Commander as well as Civilian employees from a variety of different sections including PSF, FMS, AEB, Catering, Fire Section, various BSW sections, ECM, Supply, XIII Squadron, TMS and Depth.
