Norfolk members of The Royal British Legion visited Royal Air Force Marham yesterday accompanied by the now rather famous sight of Poppyman, a ‘VIP’ who has been travelling around the county to promote the work of the Legion and launch the 2008 Poppy Appeal.
After a brief reception in the Officers’ Mess, the veterans visited IX(B) & XIII Sqns where they were introduced to XIII Sqn Weapons System Operator, Flying Officer Jen Shackley.
Poppy Man was of course given the opportunity to sit in the cockpit of a Tornado GR4 and to support a photo call for the launch of the Marham Poppy Appeal.
Poppy Man, originally designed by a florist in Cornwall, has recently launched the 2008 Poppy Appeal among friends in Basra. This year's theme "Serving those who Serve" emphasises the need to help the men and women who are serving today, as well as those who have retired from the Services and their Dependants.
In an attempt to promote the Legions work with a younger generation, this year’s Poppy Appeal is also being boosted by proceeds from The X Factor Single ‘Hero’ which is being released by the popular TV programme finalists. Proceeds from the release of the single will be divided equally between the Poppy Appeal and Help for Heroes.
The British public holds great affection and respect for its Armed Forces. The Poppy Appeal is your opportunity to show your support, so please give generously and wear your poppy with pride.
