Brownies Activities up to July 2007

Right to Be Happy

Smile -
A group activity, which involved the girls talking about what makes them happy. They also learnt about the importance of listening to others.

Feeling Happy -
Using pictures from magazines the girls had to discuss why they thought the people were happy - there were some very interesting answers. They then made a promise to make someone else happy and they decorated postcards with details of who they were going to make happy and how they would do it. Some examples were:

My Mum - Tidying my bedroom

My friend - Being a good friend/Telling her funny jokes,

My Sister - Playing with her

My Dad - Making him a cup of tea

Zorga -
The girls drew a picture of an imaginary girl from another planet who is going to join the Brownies. They then had to say something nice and then make a less pleasant comment e.g. she is funny but she smells a bit. When they had made the unpleasant comment they then had to tear a piece of the picture. At the end the girls had to try to put the picture back together. This exercise gave the girls a visual example of who hurtful and negative comments can effect others.

Right to Be Me

Know your Pebbles -
The girls decorated pebbles using craft material. This exercise showed they girls that even though they all received a pebble they are all different and this is the same for people.

Thank You -
The girls thought about who helps them and how important it is to have other people in their lives to help and care for them. The girls then wrote a thank you note to someone special in their lives e.g.

Thanks Mum for looking after me

Thank you my friend for playing with me

Thank you sister for helping me with my homework

Thank you Dad for taking me on holiday

Right to Work Together

Island Hopping -
This was a fun activity, which involved team work.

Never Walk Alone -
The girls had to try and walk across the room by forming a line and keeping their feet together with the person next to them. This sounds quite easy but without working as a team it is impossible.

Join Hands -
The girls were split into small groups and they had to hold hands. The 2 girls on the ends had to use their free hands to carry out a number of tasks including cutting string and drawing pictures.

Team Building -
The girls were given newspapers, a roll of tape per team and a pair of scissors. They then had to build a shelter using the resources provided. The shelter had to be big enough for all of the team to get under. The girls really enjoyed this activity and there was lots of laughter and some interesting shelters!!!

Right to Be Heard

Broken Telephone -
This activity was a version of Chinese whispers, but the girls sat on chairs, in a line one in front of the other. The Brownie at the back was given an easy task to mime to the person in front of them e.g. wrapping a present and making a drink.

The mime is then passed all the way to the front where the last girl has to say what she thinks the mime was. There were some very interesting mimes and answers!!

Take a Vote -
The girls were asked to vote on the game they would like to play. After they had voted the leaders chose a different game. The girls were then asked how they felt when their views were not taken into account. We then discussed how they feel when their teacher, parents or friends don't listen to them and also how other people must feel when we don't listen to them.

We then played the game they originally chose.

These are only an example of some of the activities the girls have done to complete their badges.

We have also played lots of games, had a promise evening and also made mothers day cards.

Promise Evening -
As part of the promise evening the Brownies listened to the Brownie story.

The girls that were working toward their hostess badge prepared their tables with a tablecloth, table decoration and a plate of homemade food for their guests.

Visit to Frankie and Benny's -
Instead of a Christmas Party the girls decided that they would like to go and have something to eat at Frankie and Benny's, King's Lynn. The girls really enjoyed themselves and the food was excellent.

Activities are carried out in small groups and also as a pack. We hold Pow-Wows where we discuss the Programme for the term and the girls are given the opportunity to choose the activities we do for each term.
