Kart Club
RAF Marham Kart Club
The RAF Marham Kart Club has been established since 2002 and consists of five Corporate Karts; each equipped with a Honda 160cc 4-stroke engine, capable of reaching speeds in excess of 35mph. The Corporate Kart facility is situated south of the airfield, between XIII Sqn and 2620 Sqn. With the club as an amenity on camp, we can offer an inexpensive and affordable introduction to Kart racing for all RAF Marham personnel and their dependants (age 12 and over). We cater for all levels of experience and can provide party bookings for all occasions.
The Kart Club offers 2 types of booking:
• A group booking, this is £5 per person for 10 mins, £10 for 20 mins and £15 for 30 mins. This can consist of 5 Karts per race, if there is more than 5 people, the club members will organize the race into heats to suit your requirements. This is ideal for any occasion or even just mates out for a laugh.
• Endurance race, this is £30 per Kart per hour, with a maximum of 4 persons per team. This package gives you the option to hold a 1 or 2 hour endurance race, controlled by the club marshals. This race will be 4 Karts racing at once; driver changes and refueling tactics could win or cost you the race! If you are up for a challenge and wish to compete with other sections or departments, this is the event for you.
New to the club is arrive and drive, which is held between the hours of 1700 and 1900 on Monday nights and is open to anyone who feels the need for speed after a hard days work, but doesn’t want to spend a lot of money to do so. You never know you may be an up and coming F1 driver and you didn’t know it, or if you just fancy a competitive race with your mates this is the best way to do it.
The club will provide helmets, gloves, overalls and the best bit Karts. However, we do ask you to wear shoes that cover the whole foot, no open toe shoes or sandals. There is no height restriction. However, all personnel and dependants must be able to operate the accelerator and brake in a safe manner and we will check before you go racing. If you are under 16 years of age you will need to provide a consent form signed by your parent/guardian.
The Kart Club also caters for the Air Training Corps (ATC) in the summer months on a Monday evenings, as part of their summer camp. This is a very entertaining night for them and the club’s members, the cadets always leave with a smile on their face and the club is always mentioned in the end of camp critic as one of the best evenings of the week they spend here at RAF Marham. These events are held to help the cadets relax and start enjoying the week they spend at RAF Marham. The club provides them with all the equipment and track briefs. The club the provides marshals to make sure all their races are safe and controlled. We are always looking for people to help with this task as it is a lot of work but very rewarding.
Additionally the club provides the opportunity for service personnel to participate in competitive racing at a considerably reduced cost. The club has two brand new Pro-Karts, each powered by two race tuned Honda 160cc 4-stroke engines and can reach speeds in excess of 60mph. Teams of 3-4 Marham personnel enter each of the Pro-Karts owned by the club into a 2 hour endurance race in each Pro-Kart round of the RAF Kart Championships. Club members can also use their own Karts at these events where there is a class for high powered 2-stroke karts which can reach speeds of up to 95 mph. The club currently has six personnel competing in this class, so help and advice is available to anyone wishing to make a move to high level motorsport.
The RAF Championships are held in numerous locations across the UK, the first being in April and the last in October. This involves personnel traveling to the events and camping out ‘track side’. Normally warm up is held on the Friday and then the Pro-Karts race on the Saturday afternoon/evening with practice throughout the morning before. The 2-stroke events are held on the Sunday and consist of several heats, and then a final is held on the Sunday afternoon. This is a great opportunity for personnel to go away for a weekend and really enjoy what they are doing as well as having pride in representing their unit in the RAF Kart Championships.
The Club is open to all RAF personnel and their dependants.
The Club is also looking for more members to help race, run and maintain the karts. There are various committee positions available, so if you fancy a new challenge or just fancy helping out whilst learning some new technical skills we are always happy to hear from you. All we ask is that you are committed and aren’t shy of some hard but rewarding work.
