RAF Marham Scouts receive Beacon Lamp

With the clocks going forward, an event encompassing over 70 Scouts ranging from Beavers to Scouts took place outdoors at RAF Marham. The ceremony was part of the celebrations to commemorate the Centenary of the Scouting Movement. The RAF Scouting Group received the Beacon Lamp, which is an anchor light from SS Great Britain, which is over one hundred and sixty years old. It is a fitting symbol for Scouts in Norfolk to use it to celebrate 100 years of Scouting. Like Scouting, the lamp has sailed in every ocean of the world, experienced great occasions, storms and setbacks. After a lifetime of service visiting every continent on the planet, the SS Great Britain is now proudly back home in Bristol. The lantern was received from Wereham Scout Group and passed onto representatives of the Runcton Holme Scouts. After the proceedings, in which each group re-pledged their promise, Group Scout Leader ‘Bob’ Monkhouse said “It was a great turn out by the Group at all levels. I was particularly delighted that the Group was able to host such a beautiful piece of history and let Group members be a part in a Centenary Celebration which encompasses numerous Groups as part of Norfolk County’s 100 years of Scouting activities.

"I hope that this Ceremony, one of many that the Group will be participating in, as part of our 100th anniversary of Scouting has widened our visibility not just within RAF Marham but also in the local area leading to an increase in numbers.”
