Training
The RAF Martial Arts Association aims to bring together practising martial artist from all styles (with the exception of Judo, who operate under their own separate Association) to train and compete within the RAF, against our Navy and Army counterparts as well as part of a wider combined service team in civilian competition circuits. Although RAFMAA embraces all fighting styles, competitions at RAF, Inter-Service and Combined Service level are fought out in 3 principle disciplines: Point Stop Kumite, Light Continuous Sparring and Kendo, all of which are formally recognised by the Combined Service and RAF Sports Boards.
In the past, the two disciplines of Point Stop Kumite and Light Continuous Sparring have only been traditionally open to Karate and Taekwondo practitioners. However, as an adaptive, open and flexible Association, we actively encourage and support all martial art practitioners and fighting styles in representing their service when competing in one or both of these 2 disciplines (provided they fit the criteria for competition under the governing bodies set out below). Point Stop Kumite and Kata competitions are governed under World Karate Federation (WKF) rules and the Light Continuous sparring and ITF patterns are governed by United Kingdom Taekwondo Association (UKTA) rules.
