Flight Lieutenant Piers L Morrell LRSM LTCL DipTCL RAF
After studying at Simon Balle School, Hertford, where he began his musical training, Piers continued his studies on trombone at Trinity College of Music, London. After graduating in 1994 he worked as a music teacher for East Hertfordshire and as a freelance musician, the pinnacle of which was working with the Hong Kong Philharmonic and the Canadian Opera Company.
Piers joined the Royal Air Force in 1997 and after graduating from Recruit Training Squadron at Royal Air Force Halton he was posted to the Band of the Royal Air Force Regiment as a Musician. In 2000 he was posted to The Central Band of The Royal Air Force at Royal Air Force Uxbridge where he served until he was selected for Initial Officer Training in 2006.
Graduating in 2007 as a Flying Officer he remained at Royal Air Force College Cranwell taking command of the Band of the Royal Air Force Regiment. In July 2008 he was posted to The Central Band of The Royal Air Force and was promoted to Flight Lieutenant in 2009.
Ceremonial duties with the Central Band of the Royal Air Force have included the Lord Mayors Show, the Remembrance Parade at the Cenotaph, the Festival of Remembrance, and the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. He has also worked with international artists Russell Watson and Hayley Westenra, and in 2010 whilst in Moscow for the 65th Anniversary Victory Parade on Red Square, he was invited by the Principal Director of Russian Military Music Major General Valery Khalilov to conduct the massed international bands in the finale of the Ode to Peace Festival.
On completion of the Junior Officer Development Programme in 2012 he was posted to Headquarters Music Services to his current post of Director of Music, Headquarters Music Services. He is currently responsible for all aspects of management planning, recruitment, training, budgets, allocations and policy administration within Royal Air Force Music Services.
A keen sportsman, he has run the London Marathon twice, enjoys road cycling and martial arts. His studies in Shotokan Karate have led to representing the Royal Air Force at Tri Service level and have brought success in competition at Association level.
