Drum Major of the Band of the RAF Regiment
Chief Technician Steve Maher FTCL LTCL MILM GCGI
Chief Technician Stephen Maher was born and educated in West Bromwich, West Midlands. He began playing the Trumpet at the age of 13 and after attaining sufficient qualifications, attended The Trinity College of Music London from 1979 to 1982. He went on to a further period of study at The National Centre for Orchestral Studies, Goldsmiths College, London from 1982 to 1983.
He joined the Royal Air Force in 1983 and after initial training at RAF Swinderby, was posted to the Central Band as a Cornet player until 1985 where he moved to RAF Catterick as the Principal Cornet of the Band of the RAF Regiment. Whilst at Catterick, he was awarded the Sultan of Oman's Air Force Award.
With the closure of RAF Catterick he was posted to the Band of the RAF College, but in 1997 returned to the Central Band of the RAF. Upon promotion to Chief Technician in 2005, Steve Maher was posted back to the Band of the RAF College.
Having seen active Service in the first Gulf War, he has also visited Cyprus, Hong Kong, Germany, Holland, Moscow, Gibraltar, Falklands, Poland and Budapest as well as performing at all the major Concert venues in the UK. He is married to Cathy and has one teenage son.
Stephen was posted to and appointed Drum Major of the Band of the Royal Air Force Regiment in March 2011.
