Royal Air Force Shades of Blue
The Shades of Blue Orchestra was formed in 1999 when the Band of the RAF Regiment moved to its present location at RAF Cranwell.
Established as an 18-piece ensemble, it has earned a fine reputation for its versatility and excellence, and is noted for its interpretation of a wide range of musical styles such as the big band standards from Glenn Miller and Count Basie, funk from Weather Report and some of the more modern numbers from Phil Collins and Robbie Williams. Many of the numbers the Orchestra perform are arranged by band members, past and present.
The Shades of Blue Orchestra is often featured in concerts given by the Band of the Royal Air Force Regiment besides giving concerts in its own right. The Orchestra often works with guest vocalists, broadening the band’s repertoire to include songs made famous by Frank Sinatra and Tom Jones to name but a few.
Leader: Corporal Ben Bradley
Ben joined RAF Music Services in 2007 following fifteen years as a musician with the Band of the Scots Guards. After a short spell of training at RAF Uxbridge, Ben was posted to The Band of the RAF Regiment and within months was appointed Principal Trombone.
Ben was delighted to be appointed leader of Shades of Blue Orchestra in August 2011. He is looking forward to directing rehearsals and concerts and putting his stamp on future performances by the orchestra.
