Walter Broom and family - The First Airman in Blue

Timeline - The First Airman in Blue

In the Spring of 1918 the Blandford Band were given the singular honour of being the first unit to exchange the original kaki uniforms for new blue RAF uniforms. The Band gathered in the Savoy Hotel in London for the occasion

The above picture is a family shot of Musician Walter Broom, who was in the Blandford (France) Band. On receiving his new uniform he raced upstairs to change and so say he was the very first airman in blue! Interestingly he was a cousin of Sir Ivor Broom, the famous WW2 pilot.

The Central Band of the Royal Air Force were issued their ‘blues’ on Saturday 08 October 2010.
