Cpl Tony Giles, Principal Alto saxophonist for The Band of the Royal Air Force Regiment, is one of the founder members of The RAF Waveriders Association (RAFWRA). This year saw a return to form for Tony with a 4th place in the RAFWRA surfing Championships "Open" division, held in September at Penhale in Cornwall. Tony won his heats and his semi final, which were held in nearly perfect 3-4ft clean waves. The Final was held the next day with the 4 top surfers in the RAF battling it out for 20 minutes in slightly less powerful 2-3ft surf.

Tony said "I am really happy to have made the final. I have been training hard this year and the final was my goal. I'm a bit disappointed with the way I surfed in the final, but all credit to the other finalists who simply out surfed me in the smaller surf. Now, I'm back in the RAF surf team and looking forward to the Inter-services surf competition to be held at the end of October."
