A new Spitfire replica has been installed at the entrance to the No 11 Group Operations Room at RAF Uxbridge to join the Hurricane in Polish markings that was unveiled in September. The Spitfire previously stood at the entrance to RAF Uxbridge but was taken away for refurbishment and repainting in D-Day markings. The Operations Room (or Battle of Britain Bunker as it is more commonly known) at RAF Uxbridge is famous for its role in the Battle of Britain but what is less well known is that the bunker also was also used to control the D-Day Normandy landings.

The refurbishment of the Spitfire was paid for by the London Borough of Hillingdon as part of its Civic Pride agenda and was unveiled by Council Leader Cllr Ray Puddifoot on 27 October in the presence of Mayor of Hillingdon Cllr David Yarrow, RAF Northolt personnel, Normandy veterans and a number of other civic guests and Mayors from other London Boroughs.

Despite the formal closure of RAF Uxbridge the No 11 Group Operations Room is to be retained by the RAF and parented by RAF Northolt.
