Chinook

Joint Helicopter Force (Afghanistan)

Despite the sudden increase in temperature, all aircraft types are coping well and continue to deliver all-round capability. The high operational tempo has ensured regular tasking, with troops on the ground fully supported, both in attack, transport and resupply.

1310 Flt RAF – Chinook Det – A busy week for the Chinook Flt in the MERT role. A higher number of multinational evacuation missions has challenged the det, but seen them rise to the challenge every time. The Commanding General of the US Marines 1st Div personally thanked the MERT team for their hard work in rescuing one his Marines in an extremely fast turnaround that undoubtedly saved the Marine’s life.

1419 Flt RAF, Merlin Det – This week has seen Merlin aircraft supporting the US Marine Corps with many insertions across the AO. A hasty Op with 2 PARA, Op KAPCHA KHATARNAK, saw the first use of the reduced planning cycle allowing a level of exploitation not normally available. Merlin Engineers have again performed admirably, providing extra aircraft to help cover “MERT-lite” and a busy tasking programme, which included High Readiness Force (HRF) cover and night flying serials.
