Ops Update 03 May 2009

OPERATION HERRICK

Pilots in Cockpit. The operational tempo continued unabated this week for the Hercules C-130 aircraft of 904 EAW, despite some insurgent activity. All planned sorties were completed and over 2300 passengers were transported and in excess of 220 tonnes of cargo delivered. A complete range of sorties was experienced this week, delivering direct support to NATO’s International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). Underpinning this level of flying effort, and called upon to rectify various faults, the aircraft engineers worked tirelessly to ensure that sufficient aircraft remained available to meet required tasking.

Sorties this week included reconnaissance work integrated with other agencies to seek out Improvised Explosive Devices on the ground. This cooperative integration included some ‘first-time use’ of ground-breaking capability. As well as successful prosecution of Close Air Support sorties, Shows of Presence and Shows of Force were also conducted. Aircraft serviceability was maintained at an extremely high level by concerted effort from dedicated engineering and logistic support.

Following a hydraulic leak, the Tristar of 902 EAW was not available for all planned air-to-air refuelling tasks until later in the week but was able to complete 5 sorties in total, dispensing fuel to a wide variety of Coalition aircraft.

OPERATION TELIC

RAF Police Corporal Alistair Inkersole and his Air Dog. The VC-10 detachment has enjoyed yet another successful week, accomplishing 12 sorties in support of Op TELIC. Over 190 tonnes of fuel was dispensed throughout the week to Coalition receiver aircraft.

A steady operational tempo kept the Hercules aircraft of 901 EAW busy supporting passenger and freight transportation across the Operation TELIC region. Over 1000 passengers were transported and over 120 tonnes of freight moved and supplies delivered. All planned sorties were completed despite some minor engineering issues earlier in the week. Overall the serviceability of the aircraft was maintained at an excellent level, due to the ongoing support and expertise from the engineers and logistics personnel on the ground. In addition, the aircraft of the Communications Flight operated 24 sorties around the Region.

This is the result of closely integrated planning and execution across the whole of the Coalition contingent in the Al-Basrah area of authority.

This week saw the Tornado Squadron of 901 EAW successfully support the handover ceremony at Basra. The event marked the transfer of authority from 20 (Armoured) Brigade to US forces and also recognised those individuals who had lost their lives in theatre. The Tornado GR4s also maintained a general presence in the air over the operational area of Operation TELIC supporting convoys on the ground and collecting high-quality reconnaissance imagery. The Tornado’s ability to perform a range of roles makes it an excellent choice when supporting the commanders on the ground.
