More about this squadron

2503 Squadron is a force protection squadron primarily made up of Gunners, but we also have a limited number of part-time posts in supporting trades.

Our Reservists have participated with great success in military skills competitions, and the squadron shooting team has also represented the RAF in competitions in the UK and overseas.

History and heritage

The squadron was formed at RAF Scampton in 1979, and moved to RAF Waddington in 1985. We are now a force protection squadron for the RAF Regiment. In 2007, we were presented with our standard for 25 years’ service.

Roles and specialist skills

As a Gunner, you are part of a highly mobile and heavily armed team, trained and organised to protect RAF assets and counter threats to the RAF’s aircraft and bases.

You will have to master a range of skills, which include infantry tactics, covert observation, target acquisition and close combat skills. Gunners also receive specialist weapons training, so you will become expert at handling everything from a bayonet to an anti-tank missile.

Combat training is physically and mentally demanding and can take place anywhere from the jungle to the Arctic. You need to be fit, active and prepared to endure difficult and demanding situations. For reasons of combat effectiveness, women cannot be accepted for this role.

Recent deployments

Our Reservists have served on operations in Bosnia, Kuwait and Afghanistan. In 2001, they were deployed with coalition forces to Iraq in support of Operation Telic.
