The game against Trojans started off promising with a strong attack from the RAF taking play right into the Trojans half; however a faulty line out saw the Trojans gain possession of the ball for the first time, taking it back up the field. A strong defence by the RAF Women kept play away from the try line until a penalty against the RAF Women gave Trojans the boost they needed to take the ball over our line for the first try of the match, unconverted. The remainder of the first half showed promise with both sides making good use of their forwards in the ruck situation and Trojans showing their power in the scrums. The first half ended 0 – 5.
The second half saw Trojans capitalising on the RAF Women’s mistakes, out rucking them and overpowering them in the scrums meaning the ball was kept out of our hands. A strong defence and a lot of determination from the RAF Women kept the score line down. Again, a line out for the RAF in Trojans 22 showed promise but this was lost and Trojans headed back up the park. Choosing a scrum on the RAF Women’s 5 meter proved a good choice, for Trojans, as they turned it allowing their scrum half the space to score from the back of the scrum, again unconverted.
The restart was taken quickly by the RAF hoping to catch Trojans off guard but this proved fated as it was caught successfully and past out to the backs where the winger ran in the third try for Trojans (unconverted). The rest of the match turned in to a very level battle between the two teams with some powerful runs from our recently returned second rows, Flt Lt Kirsty Meredith and Flt Lt Katherine Muir. SAC P Stone took every opportunity to disrupt the Trojans rucks and mauls enjoying playing against her own civilian team. However, Trojans sealed the game with a solid scrum on the RAF’s 22, resulting in hands out to the backs and their fourth and final try, this time converted. Final score 0 – 22.
The game highlighted some key areas for the RAF Women to work on in their next meeting which will be the build up towards their first Inter-Service fixture due to take place against the Royal Navy on Sat 10 Apr 10 at Burnaby Road, Portsmouth. KO 1600.
