Stn - 0910 - Lee Vs REME
RAF Leeming Hawks see off 6 Btn REME.
Following their recent 65-0 victory against Boulmer and a 15-0 hard fought away victory against Mansfield RUFC the Hawks Rugby Union side feared for their unbeaten record as they welcomed the well prepared Army side 6 Btn REME from Tidworth.
The game started at quite a pace as the Leeming hawks turned up the pressure on the shocked REME side, scrum after scrum was taking place and powerfully well marshalled as ‘Sub’ JFACTSU and Hooper 34 Sqn drove the REME pack off the ball. It was very much all Leeming for the first 10 Minutes with wave after wave of attacking play with powerful second rows Wood and Preston 90 SU (Excalibur editor) brushing off prospective tacklers, but then, disaster! As Wood embarked on a typically powerful crash the ball was offloaded and intercepted by the REME centre who sprinted 40 metres against the run of play to inflict the first points conceded by the Leeming Hawks all season. Following the conversion Leeming were 7 points down all of a sudden under pressure with the free running REME backs seeing a lot of ball needing strong first up tackles from Hawks back rowers Walker 34 Sqn, Glover GEF and Vuniduvu 10 Fd.
Soon the game turned again with Stevenson at 10 taking the ball and dummying his opposite number before crossing the try line for Leeming’s first points of the game, with the conversion missed the Hawks were still behind but were firmly in control as from the kick off possession was regained and released to the backs Lulu the 10 Fd centre received the ball from Stevenson and crashed through two attempted tackles before kicking it through only for Butch 10 Fd to have judged to have been upended. Wood then opted to tap and go which was the right decision as he crossed the line with ease to put Leeming in the lead for the first time. Stevenson completed a solid fight back in the first half as he rewinded at the back of the scrum received the ball from Hartshorne and scored to make the score 15-7 to Leeming at the half.
The second half brought wholesale changes as the Hawks attempted to give all players game time, this disruption worked in the visitors favour as they scored and converted to make the score an uncomfortable 15-14 to Leeming. All doubt was erased towards the end of the match as Rowley at scrum half picked up the ball at a ruck and scuttled over the line, following this the big second row Wood took the ball from a seemingly impossible angle to drop kick the ball over the posts to take the final score to 22-15 to RAF Leeming Hawks, their unbeaten start to the season still intact.
