V - 08/09 - Bury St Edmonds
RAF Vultures Vs Bury St Edmonds - 5 - 10 (L)
Following the Training Camp the Vets had a break to let the bodies recover and then played Bury St Edmunds under lights.
This was the Vets second full game of the season and with several familiar faces unavailable it gave the opportunity for newer players to make their mark on the game.
It was a fast and furious but lack lustre game with the Team, which contained several new faces, under pressure for long periods of time, particularly in the scrummage, the alarm bells stated ringing when the scrum was propelled backwards in the early encounters but it was just what was required to prepare and condition the side of the tough task of retaining the Inter-Service Championship.
On many occasions the Vultures took the ball, unnecessarily into contact and got turned over and it was from these situations that a series of quick counter attacks took place and Bury St Edmunds scored two quick tries, thankfully unconverted, so the Vultures turned around at half-time 10-0 down. In the second half the Vultures brought more shape and composure to their game before rallying in the 2nd half to score late on and then resist an onslaught on the try line by the confident Bury side in the dying moments on the game.
It took some fine try saving tackles from Craig Farrington, normally a scrum-half but playing centre/wing to contain the final score to 5-10. In some ways it was a wake up call to the Vets as they now know that they will have to perform at a higher standard and for longer periods of time if they are to retain their IS crown.
