About Sea Angling
Sea angling is a diverse sport that offers many challenges to all kinds of people.
This sport has many categories and each category contains many versions, for example:
Boat Angling,
Incorporates a variety of tactics from inshore drift fishing for Wrasse and Pollock to Offshore at anchor for conger Eels and Sharks. These tactics can also be reversed so that you can drift offshore and anchor inshore, and the opportunity to target many different types of species is a rewarding challenge. This is just the start, there are many other factors too, tide timings and height, location, season, moon phase, types of ground and much more. Add to this the types of tackle needed for each of the various tactics and then the species targeted plus the types of bait needed, when you put this all together you start to understand the complexities and challenges this sport can offer.
Shore Angling,
Provides the same complexities as boat angling and in some cases more. Shore angling has a diverse season and during the harder climates, comfort is key, for example, on an exposed shingle beach where you have to walk perhaps a couple of miles or more to your peg and back with your rods, reels, bait box, water, food, rod stand, beach shelter, lights, fishing tackle, lead weights plus more, so the last thing you want is to get there and not be on top form to compete. Add to this perhaps 6 or 8 hours of wind and rain or even snow in a sub-zero climate, you begin to picture the diversity of challenges.
There are many other versions within each of these example catagories that are covered in much more detail in many of the books available. This is an ever learning sport and the key to success is preparation, to target a particular species, to win a certain competition or to just have fun, all will need varying degrees of preparation.
There are so many opportunities within RAF Sea Angling to develop not just your angling ability but your leadership, team co-operation, communication, survival, understanding, co-ordination, personal, fitness and many other skills and qualities. There are many seasoned anglers who already enjoy this sport and all will be delighted to assist you, so it’s not a case of turning up and learning the hard way, it’s simply a case of getting involved.
Perhaps one day you will develop your angling ability to an international standard and be given the opportunity to represent your country, RAF Sea Angling can provide this opportunity and the RAF Sports Board in conjunction with other organisations will be there to support you.
