Training Support and Development Sqn
Training Support and Development Squadron
The Training Support and Development Squadron (TS&DS) within CATCS is responsible for the development of training across CATCS Wing, ATC instructor training and standardisation. It is also responsible for the post-graduate training of all military controllers in their roles as trainers at RAF and RN ATC units. TS&DS comprises the Standards and Training Flight (STF), Ground Training Flight (GTF) and Training Development Team (TDT). It provides a wide range of training courses.
Such courses include the Air Traffic Control Instructors Course (ATCIC) which prepares already experienced controllers for instructor duties within the school. This seven week course teaches instructional skills which can be utilised in the classroom environment, or more importantly, the methods used to effectively teach ATC skills and practices within the many simulators used by CATCS.
Other courses offered include the three-day Unit Training Team Course One (UTTC 1) teaches inexperienced controllers to screen effectively using Brief, Monitor, Debrief (BMD) and effective questioning technique. The two-day UTTC 2 is designed for Unit Training Officers (UTO's) and senior members of unit training teams. It deals with training policy, how to run a training regime effectively and design of Computer Based Training (CBT) exercises using Replacement Initial Radar Training Simulator (RIRTS).
Another area of of CATCS training is the TG9 Accreditation Centre providing an Apprenticeship award through a combination of a NVQ level 2 in IT and Key Skills, to all TG9 new entrants. In addition the Centre also provides; Training and Developments qualifications, including A1 assessors to TG9 personnel.
GTF also conduct the theory instruction to the students throughout the School, employing computer-based training to further reinforce the knowledge imparted during classroom theory lessons.
Additionally, CATCS has developed links with overseas ATC schools and provide bespoke training in modern classroom teaching techniques.
It is essential that all of the courses provided by CATCS are maintained to reflect not only the current rules, regulations and working practices, but also customer requirements. It is equally essential to continually update the courses and integrate new technology to ensure the best possible training platform is provided for every student. To facilitate these requirements, CATCS has recently set-up a Training Design Team, who will manage future projects and look strategically at future training within the School.
