Support Wing

Support Wing provides a variety of support for Service and civilian personnel on the station including: medical, dental and pastoral care; family and individual welfare; security; pay and allowances; personnel management; physical training; personal training and development; property management; community support; community relations and PR; discipline and internal communication.

Budgets and Finance

The budget office supervises the in year budget, validation of the monthly forecast and Short Term Plan. It ensures at all times that regularity and propriety are applied when public funds are spent. The Accounts Flight deals with all matters relating to public accounts and Service Funds (non-public accounts). Public accounts processes miscellaneous bills, claims and all recoveries to the public account. Service Funds processes the Mess bills. It produces year-end accounts for the Messes and the Service Institute Fund also giving assistance with the production of the funds' annual financial plans.

Chaplain

The Station Chaplain, Rev Squadron Leader Kevin Hart can be contacted in his office, which is located in the Cookson Centre Ext 7051. Out of hours contact the Station Exchange. He is available to personnel and dependants to arrange baptisms or weddings, or for confidential counselling matters. The Station Church is located on Chapel Meadows and can be opened by prior arrangement with the Chaplain.

Community Relation Officer

The CRO acts as the interface between the station and the local community and deals with a variety of aspects of RAF Shawbury's activities. In particular, the CRO, handles:

  • Complaints from members of the public about helicopter and aircraft noise
  • Media and press relations
  • Group visits to the station (NB, visits specifically to the Defence Helicopter Flying School are dealt with by the Adjutant - Ext 7123)
  • Outside speaking engagements
  • General enquiries on current activities and station history

Contract Management Team

The Contract Management Team, is responsible for the liaison and monitoring of contract performance, ensuring that delivery is in compliance with all pertinent contractual as well as RAF engineering, supply and catering regulations and instructions. The team are responsible to the Stn Cdr and Comdt DHFS for providing data and performance in association with the contracts and providing a link between the customer and the Contractor. The Contract Management Team also includes the responsibility for all Catering accounts.

Force Development Squadron

Force Development Squadron delivers physical and adventurous training, instructional techniques training, and helicopter pre-employment training. Moreover, the Squadron provides military skills training, personal development opportunities, graphics support, and training consultation and development to prepare personnel for out of area operations and in support of the Station’s output.

Personnel Management Squadron

Personnel Management Squadron is responsible for providing local Human Resources support to all service and MOD Civilian personnel on the Station, as well as overseeing all aspects of Station Community and Welfare Support. The Officer Commanding Personnel Management Squadron also overseas the general administrative, discipline, security and policing functions of the station.


Station Health and Safety

As a major employer and landowner, the MOD takes its Health, Safety and Environmental Protection responsibilities very seriously. To that end, RAF Shawbury employs specialist staff to advise on all aspects of Health, Safety and Environmental Protection as the station continues to strive for improved occupational safety whilst minimising environmental impact.

Station Medical Centre

The Station Medical Centre is situated near the Officer's mess. We are a well-equipped practice and provide a full GP service for all entitled personnel and their families. We are also responsible for Aviation Medicine, Occupational and Environmental Health at RAF Shawbury. All service personnel are registered with the SMC. Families who live on station or reside within a 5-mile radius may, if they wish, register with the SMC or local NHS GP. All families who are outside this catchments area have to register with an NHS GP. New patients are invited for a Health Screening. This is especially important for dependants as Medical Records take some time to arrive from your previous Doctor.

Station Services Squadron/Property Management

RAF Shawbury is located on a 283-hectare site with approx 258 buildings an airfield and 2 satellite relief landing grounds. The purpose of Station Services Squadron / Property management is to maintain and develop the estate for the benefit of the students who train and live here and the people who work at RAF Shawbury.
