Military Provost Guard Service (MPGS):

The Military Provost Guard Service was formed in 1997, to rationalise armed guarding arrangements by replacing Ministry of Defence Police (MDP) Constables who were utilised for armed guarding duties. Soldiers Awaiting Training (SATs), and other soldiers who were being used for this purpose were also replaced.

In 2002 MPGS commenced employment at Royal Navy/Royal Marine units to replace Sailors/Marines tasked with duties other than armed guarding. In 2003 MPGS soldiers commenced employment at RAF units to replace members of the RAF Police who had previously been employed to guard these establishments. MPGS is the Army`s professional Armed Guarding Service and are employed in a Multi-Service environment. They have been active at RAF Spadeadam since August 2004 and are a significant security measure, consisting of a 20-man platoon.

The two functions of the MPGS are:

(1) To provide overt armed and unarmed static sentries, roving sentries and vehicle borne patrols as required.

(2) To provide access control and assist in the physical security at at MOD sites and establishments as required. This will include Issuing passes, conducting searches of vehicles, baggage, buildings and personnel, as well as carrying out incident control procedures.

Central Registry:

The Central Registry at RAF Spadeadam has a range of duties. Most importantly it is responsible for ensuring that effective records management procedures are put in place for all station records and information, whether paper-based or electronic. This involves creating and maintaining a station fileplan, carrying out timely file reviews, following a disposal schedule and raising/closing files as appropriate. The registry also monitors the movement of classified files, and maintains the station archive store.

More general duties include the receiving and despatch of all mail whether it be standard, registered, recorded or classified. The registry is also the focal point for all internal mail with a station mail run being undertaken twice a day. The principal fax machine of the station is located in the registry and the main photocopier immediately adjacent. Registry staff are also responsible for the sale of tickets to both servicemen and civilians to be exchanged for meals in the station combined mess.
