As part of Admin squadron, professional physical education opportunities and facilities are provided by the Station Physical Training Instructor to improve personal fitness levels. RAF Spadeadam is well equipped with a Gymnasium, Climbing Wall, Squash Court and other facilities including an extensive boxing facility. We also have an affiliation with Haltwhistle Golf Club, offering discounts to members. An Angling club is in operation, offering a wide variety of locations for the keen fisherman to enjoy. Added to this, we are also proud of our extensive Adventurous Training Programme. For further details, please see below:

Adventurous Training activities

Sailing

An introduction to sailing, using the Laser 2000 dinghy at Kielder Water. Although you will be accompanied at all times, you will have the opportunity to steer and sail the boat - as long as you don’t mind capsizing!

Walking in the Lakes

Walking in the Lake district with the intention of ‘bagging’ one of the peaks depending on the ability of the group and weather conditions. You'll be rewarded with a well earned pint to unwind after a hard day on the hill!

Skiing

Skiing on both indoor and outdoor venues to improve the necessary skills for the expedition in March. This is predominantly for those on the expedition, but others can join in at their own cost. Currently, the exped is full, but, if you are interested, please place your name on the reserve list, as last minute dropouts are quite common.

Climbing (Indoor & Out)

At the world’s largest indoor venue in Edinburgh, this will be an opportunity to try climbing in a safe and controlled (and dry) environment. All abilities are catered for and specialist equipment will be provided. Later on the year, there will be the chance to hone your skills on the real thing at Shepherds Crag near Keswick.

Canoeing

An introduction to the Canadian Canoe on flat water. This is a two-person canoe, which can be used on both flat water and rapids and is an excellent way of exploring the countryside and waterways. The first two days will be an introduction to canoe use and the following weekend will consist of an expedition, lasting two days. This is the challenging part, as you will have to be totally self sufficient!

White Water Rafting

Rafting on the purpose built white water facility at Teesside. This will be open to all abilities and all specialist equipment will be provided. Be prepared to get wet!

Mountain Biking

This will be at one of the recognised trails in the area and will include some technical sections. It is recommended that you are already proficient and confident on all terrains. Mountain bikes and helmets will be provided.

Scrambling

This is arguably the most famous and enjoyable scramble in the Lake District and takes you to the top of Helvellyn. All abilities are welcome, although it is recommended that you have a head for heights, as there are some quite exposed areas. Although it is termed 'scrambling', there are only a few sections where you will be required to use your hands. You will, of course, be in the safe hands of a Physical Training Instructor (PTI), so you have nothing to worry about!!

For those visiting us, there is a Camping Barn facility. Click HERE to find out more.
