ROYAL AIR FORCE PILOT GUNNING FOR SUCCESS

A ROYAL Air Force Pilot from Belfast, Northern Ireland is training to compete in Full Bore shooting at the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Delhi 2010.

Flight Lieutenant David Calvert, 59, a flying instructor at the Cambridge University Air Squadron at RAF Wyton, Cambridgeshire has been busy in preparation to take part in Full Bore shooting competitions at the Delhi games in October this year.

Flt Lt Calvert has been an enormously successful competitor, having previously won four gold and 3 bronze medals at the Commonwealth Games representing Northern Ireland. This year’s participation will mark his ninth consecutive Commonwealth Games as an athlete.

Most recently, Flt Lt Calvert won the coveted Queens Prize at Bisley, a trophy of both personal and historic significance. The Queens Prize has only ever won previously by three other RAF participants most recently in 1991.

“The ‘Queen’s Prize’, with over 1000 entrants from home and abroad, ranks for many alongside a Commonwealth Games Gold medal in terms of achievement. Having been placed 2nd in the event on 3 occasions, it was especially satisfying to take the top spot during this, my final year, in the Royal Air Force.”

Previously Flt Lt Calvert has achieved gold, silver and bronze medals in the Commonwealth Federation Shooting Championships earlier this year in New Delhi, in both pairs and individual events.

Acting Station Commander from RAF Wyton, Wing Commander Steve Beanlands said: “We are extremely proud and excited at the prospect of David competing in the forthcoming Commonwealth Games. He has achieved many impressive accolades over the years in shooting and we applaud his dedication and commitment to the sport. We wish him well with his training in preparation for the games and I have no doubts that all at Brampton Wyton and Henlow will join me in wishing him all the very best of luck for when he is competing in Delhi.”

Aside from national representation, Flt Lt Calvert has in his time flown Vulcan Bombers and Phantom Air Defence fighters, reaching the rank of Wing Commander before taking on his current flying instructional duties as a Full-time Reservist.
