ROYAL AIR FORCE OFFICER SHOOTING FOR GOLD AT THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES

A Royal Air Force Officer is flying high that he’s been selected to represent England at the Commonwealth Games, being held in Melbourne in March.

Wg Cdr Peter Flippant, 43 from Bedford has been chosen as part of the England squad heading for the 2006 Commonwealth Games. An accomplished shooter, Peter will be competing in the 25m Centerfire Pistol event.

Peter is originally from Wimborne, Dorset, where he was former pupil of Queen Elizabeth’s School, Wimborne. Having realised from an early age that a life in the Royal Air Force was for him, he joined as a Supply Officer in 1983.

Peter has served in the Royal Air Force for over 22 years and is currently based near Bath. He has served at numerous units both home and abroad, including tours in Germany and Sarajevo, Bosnia. In his current job Peter specialises in streamlining and promoting efficiency in the modern Royal Air Force. Peter presently lives in Bedford with his wife Elaine and their 2 children, Tom and Amy.

Competition is fierce within the shooting disciplines, however training has been made even harder since the ban on Pistol Shooting in Great Britain took effect in 1998. This law prevents the athletes training in this country, so Peter is forced to train overseas in Switzerland and, inevitably, success has been more difficult to come by.

Peter has been competing at international level for over 10 years, representing Great Britain and England at target pistol shooting. He is ranked number one in Great Britain in the Centerfire Pistol discipline.

No stranger to the Commonwealth Games, Peter has already represented his country at the 1998 and 2002 Games. He states that his greatest successes were 11th place in the 1995 European Championships and a win in the Nordic Regional Championships, where he beat the then World Champion.

When not on the range, Peters’ hobbies include, playing the Saxophone, Bridge and crosswords. Although officially selected for the England Squad, these Games are likely to be his last major shooting competition.
