Defence Training Estates (DTE)

Defence Training Estates (DTE) Cornwall

DTE Mission:
To provide and develop a safe and sustainable training estate and facilities to meet the training requirements of Defence.

DTE – Defence Training Estates South West is one of 11 national regions supporting the need for troops and cadet organisations to train in safe and operationally realistic environments whilst maintaining public safety. DTE SW is managed and operated from RAF St Mawgan, where the vast majority of accommodation and messing facilities are maintained. DTE SW is commanded by Lt Col Andy Westcott (Ret’d) and with his small support team he is responsible for bringing in over 100 000 personnel/nights to the local area every year – probably more than all but the largest local hotel or attraction.

The personnel using the facilities range from serviceman receiving essential pre-deployment training to cadets conducting adventurous training. Moreover, many of the units consist of small groups of personnel taking the opportunity to take a physically demanding, but enjoyable break from the current high operational work load. Others consist of large units conducting professional manoeuvres on specific military ranges; however, all bring with them enormous benefits to the local economy in terms of both employment and spending potential.
