Ysgol y Tywyn
Ysgol y Tywyn is a small, friendly Local Authority school, which has served RAF Valley since 1971. On Anglesey this school is a unique educational establishment due to the very high proportion of RAF dependants who attend the school. The majority of pupils come from an RAF background, although a small number of local children also attend. The school has close links with the RAF and is delighted to be a part of this small community.
The school is based most conveniently on the Domestic Site at RAF Valley, near the Community Centre, the Crèche, the Playgroup, the NAAFI and the Training & Welfare centre. The school's Nursery Unit is housed in a building directly opposite the school, which belongs to the Station. Most children are able to walk to school due to the close proximity of the houses. The Adams Close family quarters (Rhosneigr) are in the Ysgol y Tywyn catchment area and hence the LEA provides free transport for the children from this area who attend the school.
Language Policy
All children of personnel serving at RAF Valley, who attend this school, are exempt from following the Anglesey education Authority's bilingual policy, unless their parents wish them to do so. The children will be taught in English, and Welsh will be taught as a second language according to the requirements of the National Curriculum.
Education
High educational achievements, as reflected in the annual SATs results, are one of the school's trademarks.
Key Stage 1 SAT Results:
100% achieved Level 2 or above in English and Mathematics.
Key Stage 2 SAT Results:
100% achieved Level 4 or above in English.
100% achieved Level 4 or above in Science.
75% achieved Level 4 or above in Mathematics.
All results are well above the national average.
The school believes that this is a direct result of the friendly, caring environment, which is fostered here and also small class sizes. All of the teachers at eh school are highly experienced, friendly and approachable and quite used to dealing with the problems which children sometimes experience when moving to a new school. Strong links exist between parents and the school. Parents help out in a variety ways such as in the classroom environment and in helping to raise money for school funds.
