2503 Sqn
No 2503 (County of Lincoln) Squadron RAuxAF Regiment
No 2503 (County of Lincoln) Squadron RAuxAF Regiment is situated on the Eastern side of the airfield at RAF Waddington. The Squadron was formed at RAF Scampton in 1979 to provide ground defence for the Vulcan Force, moving in 1985 to RAF Waddington where it is now a force sustainment squadron for the RAF Regiment.
The Squadron is manned by a small number of regular RAF personnel with the remainder being part-time gunners recruited from the local area up to a 50 mile radius of RAF Waddington.
The Squadron is highly trained in the infantry skills necessary to enable it to defend RAF installations against any potential enemy. It is capable of detecting any intruder by the use of foot and vehicle-mounted patrols, observation posts, roadblocks and by employing 'state of the art' electronic equipment. Once a threat has been detected, a heavily armed, vehicle mounted, immediate readiness force is dispatched to counter it. Of particular note was the Squadron's deployment as part of the Coalition Forces in Iraq during Operation TELIC.
The Squadron is self-contained and has its own technical back up. It is equipped with its own fleet of Land Rovers and 4-ton vehicles, employs a full range of infantry weapons, and has a comprehensive array of night surveillance devices and radios.
