OPS
Operations Wing
RAF Waddington Operations Wing is responsible for all aspects of flying and air operations. The Wing comprises Operations Squadron, Operational Support Squadron, the Sentry Standardisation Unit, Air Traffic Control, Fire Squadron and Security Squadron.
Operations Squadron
The Station Operations Room is manned 24 hours a day, and is responsible for the day-to-day coordination of the flying programme. The Squadron is also responsible for all other operational requirements relating to visiting aircraft.
Operational Support Squadron (OSS)
The OSS acts as the focal point for E-3D support. The Squadron provides Intelligence, Electronic Warfare, Communications and Mission Documentation support to all E-3D crews flying at home and abroad, and to some No 51 Squadron deployments. Additionally, the Squadron produces mission planning data and pre-mission briefings for all E-3D crews. Similar tailored support is offered to NATO, French and US AEW crews and to other visiting detachments, as required. Air Plans and Plans Co-ordination handle all week-to-week and longer-term planning of E-3D Component activity to ensure that each sortie is properly controlled, administered and optimised to provide the maximum training value for both air and ground units.
Sentry Staneval Unit (SSU)
The SSU is responsible for the evaluation and standardisation of all E-3D aircrew and for liaison with sister organisations at the NAEW&C Force Component at Geilenkirchen, Germany. Additionally, the SSU acts as a focal point for all matters pertaining to orders, instructions and standard operating procedures for E-3D operations.
Air Traffic Control and Fire Squadron
Air Traffic Control (ATC) and the Fire Squadron provides the Approach Radar and Tower facilities to support flying operations and visiting aircraft. The Squadron also provides a continuous Lower Airspace Radar Service for transiting aircraft within 30 nm and up to 9,500 ft amsl.
The Fire Section maintains the airfield crash services, and fire cover for the Station domestic site. A civilian contracted company responsible to the Senior Air Traffic Control Officer (SATCO) carries out airfield bird control.
Security Squadron
Security Squadron provides RAF Waddington with all its police and security requirements. It supports and assists in all aspects of Station life, including provision of operational support both at home and abroad. Its headquarters, situated opposite the Main Guardroom (MGR) is where the Squadron's administrative staff, Counter Intelligence and Special Investigations personnel carry out their work. The Military Guard Service provides control of entry service, whilst 24 hour RAF Police cover is provided and contactable via the Operations Room located in the MGR. The Squadron has a large Military Dog Section responsible for dog patrols of the Station.
