Sports

The fitness of personnel in the Royal Air Force is a priority. RAF Waddington’s Physical Education Flight and the many sports activities that are available on station support this ideal. RAF Waddington has a fully equipped gymnasium and also features tennis courts, football/rugby pitch, all weather pitch, squash courts and a swimming pool. There is also a weights bay and a multi-purpose indoor sports hall.

Fitness Suite

Open to all gym members over the age of 16. The Fitness Suite is comprised of a wide range of cardio-vascular equipment including bikes, treadmills, steppers, X-trainers and rowers, tread climbers as well as an area for abdominal work and stretching.

Weights Bay

Open to all gym members over the age of 16. A facility mainly comprised of resistance machines. There is also a free weights area and an area for abdominal work and stretching.

Sports Hall

This facility is open to all gym members. Sports that can be played here are basketball, volleyball, uni-hockey, badminton and short tennis. Equipment can be obtained from the sports store during opening hours. This is where station circuits and fitness training occurs.

Astro Turf

This facility is open to all gym members. It is used for both football and hockey. To use this facility please book through the gymnasium.

Golf Club

RAF Waddington Golf Club is situated on the far side of the airfield. The course plays off 18 tee boxes to 10 Greens. The 3rd /12th hole has the unusual feature of a large tree in the middle of the green. Playing at RAF Waddington Course has allowed many to sample the delights of the game of golf. We encourage those beginning or refining the game to try out Waddington's golf course- very competitively priced, we are sure that you will be pleasantly surprised. Climbing Wall

The climbing wall can only be used when supervised by a qualified instructor. The climbing club runs on  Wednesday evenings from 1930. To organize section team-building sessions on the wall please contact the gymnasium.

Swimming Pool

The Swimming Pool is located next to the Station Gymnasium. Swimming costs £1.50 per session, with under-5s FREE, but look out for our regular specials. The swimming pool is free to use for Waddington Service personnel during the normal working day. There are male and female changing rooms as well as a spectator area.

The Pool Manager and her deputy, who are both trained lifeguards, are on duty during normal working hours. Fully qualified lifeguards are on duty during the evening and weekend sessions. Adventurous Training

The physical and mental rigors that are associated with Adventurous Training make it an excellent means for RAF Waddington personnel to prepare for working in a deployed environment. Consequently Adventurous Training plays a big role at RAF Waddington, with several major expeditions and many minor expeditions taking place throughout the year, incliding the following activities:

  • Rock climbing
  • Sub Aqua
  • Canoeing
  • Kayaking
  • Parachuting
  • Sailing
  • Skiing
  • Windsurfing
  • Mountaineering

Opening Hours

Once inducted the gym is open 24hrs a day via a key fob.

Inductions

Everyone who uses the gymnasium has to attend a gymnasium induction. This is to familiarise you with the facilities and Health and Safety Orders.If you require access to the gymnasium out of hours then £5.00 deposit is required for a key fob. This is payable at the gymnasium at the time of the induction.Once inducted the gym is open 24 hrs a day via key fob.

Classes Available

The classes available at RAF Waddington are Circuit Training, Spinning, Step Aerobics, Body Combat, Body Pump and Pilates.

Eligibility

Service Personnel and their dependants as authorised by OC PEd Flt.

Civilian Personnel and contractors having paid their annual gym membership covering personnel liability insurance.

Directions

Follow the main road down from the main gate. Turn left after the Junior Ranks' Mess and follow the road passed by tennis courts on the left, all the way to the end. A large car park is in front of the gymnasium.
