Ministry of Defence Hospital Unit Peterborough (MDHU(P))

The MDHU Peterborough, is a Joint Service Unit formed in March 1996. The unit has just over 200 established military posts, the majority being Service personnel but also has an important component of civilian staff. We work alongside 3000 NHS colleagues in the Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

In the Trust’s busy Hospitals, which serve a population of over 290 000, we treat civilian and Service patients predominantly from the local catchment area. There is a comprehensive range of specializations and some sub-specializations presenting a varied case mix, this provides excellent opportunities to develop our clinical skills to ensure that we meet the objectives of the Defence Health Plan 2005 – 2009. This is an exciting time to be allied closely with our host Trust, which, is a first wave NHS Foundation Trust.

We are parented by RAF Wittering which is the A4 Logisitics Hub for the Royal Air Force. This historic and active flying station provides accommodation and excellent social and sporting facilities.

MDHU Peterborough's partnership with our host Trust and involvement with our parent unit provides a unique environment in which we operate. The enthusiasm and professionalism from all staff ensures we get the best from our partnerships and achieve the best results for our patients and the Defence Medical Services.

The MDHU Peterborough is a component of the Defence Medical Education and Training Agency (DMETA). It was established to provide the necessary military and medical training for over 200 uniformed personnel and civilian staff in support of the DMETA’s core aim:

  • To make available to Commanders in Chief appropriately medically trained secondary care personnel, when required, for training, exercises and deployments.

The complement of MDHU staff includes medical and nursing personnel, allied health professionals, medical records and personnel administrators. Personnel work in many departments throughout the Trust holding positions of responsibility negotiated on a one to one basis depending on experience.
