No 1 RAF Force Protection Wing HQ
No 1 RAF Force Protection Wing Headquarters
The Headquarters (HQ) arrived at RAF Wittering in 1999, but can trace its history directly to Headquarters 33 Wing Royal Air Force Regiment, which was formed on 20 October 1952. The HQ is a small, high readiness unit of RAF Regiment, RAF Police, RAF Intelligence specialists and support staff who are tasked with providing Force Protection Command and Control to deployed air assets. Over recent years the HQ has deployed, in one guise or another, on all the major operations mounted by the Royal Air Force and the Unit continues to play a significant role in the defence of UK assets abroad. The HQ also has day-to-day command of No 3 Squadron Royal Air Force Regiment, which relocated to Wittering from RAF Aldergrove in January 2007 and No 504 (County of Nottingham) Squadron Royal Auxiliary Air Force, based at RAF Cottesmore.
