Warrant Officer Alan Murray BEM


Education – Alan was was born in Haddington, East Lothian, but was educated at St John's Comprehensive School in Singapore.

Career – Joining the Royal Air Force in January 1970 as a Clerk Secretarial apprentice, he was posted to RAF Saxa Vord in the Shetlands. His first overseas posting came in 1974 where he enjoyed the sunshine for only three and a half weeks, before the coup and invasion of Cyprus turned his dream posting to RAF Episkopi into something completely different.

Three tours in Germany, including a four year stint in the British Embassy in Bonn, serving as the assistant to the Air Attache, were sandwiched with a tour with NATO in Izmir in Turkey. In 2001, he was posted to HQ Strike Command as a member of a study team, dealing with the re-organisation and co-location of Headquarters of Strike and Personnel & Training Commands into one entity.

His final tour as a member of the regular RAF was at RAF Cranwell, where he was responsible for the administrative support to the RAF personnel in the 41 Armed Forces Careers Offices around the UK. This is his third year with the Red Arrows.

Background - Alan is married to Margaret and they have two children, Tania (26) and Stuart (24). His interests are travelling and supporting Chelsea Football Club, to the extent that he has a season ticket for Stamford Bridge.
