The Red Arrows have reached a milestone in their 2011 display work up.
After more than five months of intensive training, the Team flew their first 9-ship formation practice on Monday (21 March).
It took place on the first day of the Team’s annual pre-season training deployment, Exercise SPRINGHAWK at Royal Air Force Akrotiri in Cyprus.
Red 1, Squadron Leader Ben Murphy, said: “I’m really pleased that we have achieved this point in our training as it gets us that step closer to being ready to display to the public.
“I would like to say a big well done to all of the pilots, engineers and the support team who have all worked exceptionally hard over the winter months to get us to this stage.”
The Team’s 2011 display pilots are:
Red 1 – Squadron Leader Ben Murphy
Red 4 – Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging
Red 5 – Flight Lieutenant Kirsty Moore
Red 7 – Flight Lieutenant Ben Plank
Red 8 – Flight Lieutenant Dave Davies
Red 9 – Flight Lieutenant Zane Sennett
Flying the first 9-ship is a big occasion for all of the pilots, especially those who are in their first year with the Team. Speaking after they landed, Red 2, Flight Lieutenant Chris Lyndon-Smith, said: “I really enjoyed that!”
Red 3, Flight Lieutenant Sean Cunningham, said: “It was such a great way to start Exercise SPRINGHAWK.”
The last word went to Red 4, Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging. He said: “That was hard work but lots of fun.”
