Formation Skydiving
Formation Skydiving
Formation skydiving (FS) is where two or more skydivers fly close to each other. They can move around each other in all three dimenstons and can grab each other to make linked formations.
FS for Fun
FS is a popular form of recreational skydiving. It is challenging, increases freefall skill and is much more enjoyable that jumping solo. After qualifying as a skydiver it is common to take up FS before starting any other of the skydiving disciplines.
Competetive FS
FS is a discipline taken to an exceptionally high standard within competition. It is probably the most popular discipline to compete in due too it's accessibility to all skydivers and no need for specialised kit.
4 Way FS
A team of 4 skydivers filmed by a cameraman leave the aircraft linked together. When they are out the door and the formation is stable they let go of each other, move into a new formation and grab hold of each other again. Each time they make a new formation they have completed a 'point'. The points are made in a set order according to a programme for the competition. The skydivers keep making the points until they have reached the end of the list where they start from the beginning again. The aim if the competition is to make as many points as possible in the alloted time.
8 Way FS
Much the same as 4 Way but with 8 skydivers. This gives the scope for more complex formations to be formed.
8 Way Speed
The 8 way speed competition was very popular in the 90s. Eight skydivers exit the aircraft as quickly as possible and race to form an 8 way star. The star is the simplest of formations whereby the skydivers form a simple ring by holding the hands of those on either side of them. The aim of the jump is to form an unbroken star as quickly as possible.
