Service-Adventure

Adventure

Members of an Air Squadron are able to make use of all of the adventurous training facilities that are available to regular service personnel. They are used to engage in leadership training, team building, personal development and, of course, to have fun!

The activities offered are wide ranging in their content and location, with many overseas expeditions. More often than not the activities are heavily subsidised, allowing students to participate in activities, which may otherwise be prohibitively expensive.

The activities on offer include, but are not limited to:

  • Free fall parachuting
  • Skiing (Nordic)
  • Dog Sledging
  • Sailing (on and off shore)
  • Scuba diving
  • Paragliding
  • Hang gliding
  • Surfing
  • Gliding
  • Kayaking
  • Mountaineering

It is not necessary to have experience in any particular activity to participate, as qualified supervisors and instructors are present during all activities to offer instruction at all levels. In fact, many Air Squadron members have attended courses at adventure training centres world wide - leading to instructor qualifications. They are then qualified to supervise others on subsequent expeditions.

SUAS prides itself in the amount of activities its members organise and participate in. Recent expeditions include a skiing expedition to Mayrhofen, Austria, Scuba diving in Egypt, climbing in Spain and canoeing in Canada. Other members have taken part in an inter-UAS counter insurgency exercise in Scotland for 14 days, and yet more members spent 2 weeks in Germany learning to Paraglide. All gained valuable qualifications and experiences that will last a life time.

Use of Adventurous Training Centres in the UK and overseas are available, and UASs do engage in leadership training and personal development. Courses on cold-weather survival, windsurfing, rock-climbing, abseiling, skiing are available - all activities in which past students have become involved.
