The Pilot
RAF Typhoon Display Pilot 2012
Squadron Leader Scott Loughran was the Typhoon Display Pilot in 2009 and is delighted to have the opportunity to perform the role again in 2012.
Scott was born in Paisley, Scotland and grew up in Largs. He was educated at Largs Academy and Glasgow University. Having been a member of the University of Glasgow and Strathclyde Air Squadron (UGSAS) he joined the Royal Air Force in 1995 as a Navigator. Having completed his Navigator training he joined 43 (F) Squadron at RAF Leuchars and contributed to the F3’s presence on Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) in the UK and the Falkland Islands.
Scott was successful in his pursuit of a pilot crossover and having completed his training joined 54 (F) Squadron flying Jaguars at RAF Coltishall. Scott immediately deployed with the Squadron to Turkey as part of Operation Northern Watch and the build up to Op Telic. He left 54 (F) Sqn shortly before they disbanded in 2005 but not before taking part in a number of overseas exercises in North America, Europe and the Middle East. Scott’s first role in the Typhoon Force was as an instructor within the Typhoon Training facility.
In 2006 Scott joined 29 (R) Squadron and became a Qualified Pilot Instructor (QPI) helping to train a number of the current Typhoon Force pilots.
In 2009 Scott had a very successful season as the Typhoon Display pilot and displayed in the UK, Europe and the Middle East.
At the end of the display season Scott was the first pilot to be posted to 6 Squadron. He was Acting Officer Commanding 6 Squadron during the build up phase at RAF Coningsby and their subsequent move and reformation at RAF Leuchars. Since then Scott has held an executive role on the Squadron. He participated with the Typhoon Force in Op ELLAMY, the UN mission in Libya, and continues to contribute to front line operations including Quick Reaction Alert at RAF Leuchars.
Scott is married with three children. He is a keen triathlete and cyclist and is planning a number of activities during the season to raise money for charity.
