Sport has an important role in the squadron furthering physical fitness and courage as well as developing team spirit and a great sense of pride. BUAS offers the opportunity to compete against all other university air squadrons in sports such as rugby, football, volleyball, hockey, swimming and rowing. Any member of the squadron can participate in these sports and as a result we have a wide range of abilities from beginner to experienced. Through our training, delivered by our Ground Training Instructor and experienced members of the squadron, we are able to build strong and cohesive teams to challenge those of other squadrons.
On a more local scale BUAS competes in the Southern Sports competition at MOD Boscombe Down. Southern Sports comprises of Bristol, Southampton, Wales and Oxford university air squadrons; BUAS has succeeded in winning this competition in both 2012 and 2013. BUAS has held sporting events against the Bristol University Royal Naval Unit and all members of the squadron also compete in a biannual sports night.
'On my first year in the UAS I took part in as much sport as possible, the weekly training sessions and weekend long competitions that this involved meant that I was able to spend time with senior members of the squadron and feel more integrated with squadron life.' - Acting Pilot Officer Dan Flamank
