Yorkshire Universities Air Squadron has kicked off the 2015 sporting calendar with a pair of well-deserved victories. Firstly, YUAS triumphed over Northumbria Universities Air Squadron in a multi-sport competition day on 21st of February and more recently on the 28th of February against teams from Sheffield University Officers Training Corps, Leeds University Officers Training Corps and Yorkshire Universities Royal Naval Unit in a University Service Unit event.
Both events were hosted by YUAS at the excellent facilities available at RAF Linton on Ouse with most sporting disciplines taking place in the station gymnasium. These included men’s and women’s football, netball, badminton, basketball and hockey with volleyball being added for the USU tournament.
At the YUAS/NUAS event, YUAS were fortunate enough to come out on top in almost all competitions and finished first by a comfortable margin in the USU tournament, with first place performances in the badminton, basketball, men’s football, women’s football and mixed volleyball. YUAS are hopeful that these victories are the first of many in what will be a competitive sporting year on the UAS calendar.
The USU tournament kicked off with hard-fought volleyball and badminton round robin competitions before the day’s events moved to nearby RAF Topcliffe for men’s and women’s hockey, returning to Linton for the remainder of the events and the trophy presentation. The day was an ideal chance to boost cross-service cooperation and friendships and also to raise money for YUAS various charities, thanks to a cake sale taking place throughout the day.
Both events were attended by Officer Commanding YUAS, Squadron Leader Sue Freeman, with the secretary of the Sheffield Military Education Committee as well as the Officer Commanding UOTC in attendance at the USU tournament to present the winners trophy. YUAS students APO Garner, Off Cdt Power and Off Cdt Sims were responsible for the organisation and smooth running of both events, and YUAS would like to thank the visiting units for their cooperation and sportsmanship during the competitions.
