Social Events & Entertainment

Yorkshire UAS is a hard working, passionate and dedicated Squadron that strives to achieve success in an extensive variety of areas. As a result of this, the student body thrives on the social occasions that YUAS has to offer. These occasions allow students and staff to interact in a familiar, relaxed and comfortable environment.

Not only are social events a great way of improving camaraderie and rapport amongst students and staff, but they also teach fundamental etiquette and communication skills that are both preeminent and crucial for any Royal Air Force Officer. Students get the opportunity to hone these skills at events such as the Squadrons Annual Dinner, which is held in the Officers Mess at RAF Linton-on-Ouse. The event is a formal occasion in which trophies are awarded to students who have excelled during the year. Annual Dinner is also a time where the Yorkshire UAS Senior Student makes a speech in front of over a hundred military personnel, usually including Air Officers and specialist VIPs.

However, not all events are so intensive; the Squadron plays host to many other functions which embellish the social occasions that the RAF partake in, such as the Summer Ball. This is one of the major social events of the YUAS calendar and includes a meal followed by a thoroughly enjoyable night including dodgems, mess games and being in the company of a close-knit group of friends.

Although the Squadron plays host to a plethora of occasions throughout the year, students are still able to mix and interact every Friday town night after administrative meetings and guest speakers. This is primarily due to the extreme privilege of the Squadron having its own fully functioning bar. The bar is student operated and all generated profits are pumped directly back into the Squadron and is now one of the primary contributors to funding for various Squadron events.

YUAS hosts an annual Friends & Families day where those close to the current students have the opportunity to visit the base and see first hand the hard work and success the Squadron has had over the last year. This day is continued in the evening with the Charities Auction taking place again at Royal Air Force Linton-on-Ouse in the Officers Mess.

• Induction Camp
• Christmas Ball

With such a demand for social occasions on the Squadron, various positions are open for students to take charge of crucial areas. These include the positions of SiC Ents, currently held by Off Cdt B Chergui, and SiC Bar, currently held by Off Cdt M Wehrle. Helped by their 2iCs, these positions develop organisational, communication and leadership attributes which, when combined, help create the skill set and character befitting that of a Royal Air Force Officer.

It is these Opportunities, Occasions and Pride that really do make the Yorkshire Universities Air Squadron the Premier UAS.
