Yorkshire UAS - Expeditions

Expeditions

Adventurous Training & Expeditions

The value of Adventurous Training in leadership and personal development is recognised by all three of the services and as such is a key part of training at Yorkshire UAS. Leadership, Physical Courage and Robustness are qualities vital to all operations conducted by the armed forces and training for those operations begins with developing individuals.

Squadron members also have the chance to attend courses in a variety of specialist activities such as sub-aqua diving, summer mountaineering, winter mountaineering, mountain biking, parachuting and sailing. There are also many opportunities for students to build upon previous Adventurous Training by becoming an instructor in different activities. Once qualified, students can then instruct other Squadron members whilst on expeditions and most qualifications are transferable to their civilian equivalents. Recently, YUAS students have gained instructor qualifications in mountain biking, sailing and hill walking.

We launched a number of expeditions last year and this year aim to build upon last year’s excellent work. We are already planning expeditions for:

  • Ski Touring in the French Alps
  • Rock Climbing in Spain
  • Multi-activity expedition to Slovenia
  • UK based caving, mountain biking and canoeing

Most expeditions are organised by the students, with administrative and technical support from the Squadron staff, so the scope for finding oneself in a new and challenging environment is vast.
