National Awards for RAF Air Cadet High Flyers

20 May 2018

High flying RAF air cadets and volunteers were honoured today at the national awards ceremony at the home of the RAF – RAF College Cranwell.

Among the winners were 19-year-old Cadet Warrant Officer Lauren Rysnburger, of 150 (City of Oxford) and Cadet Warrant Officer Darrell Kovac of 31 (Tower Hamlets) Squadron who were named the best female and male cadets, respectively in the Air Training Corps.

The prestigious awards saw them beat 31,000 other air cadets from across the UK and abroad for the titles.

To mark the event, CWO Lauren Rysnburger received the ATC 75 Sword from Air Commodore McCafferty and CWO Darrell Kovac received the Dacre Sword from Gp Capt Phil Dacre.

The top cadet in the Combined Cadet Force (RAF) was CWO Charlotte Apel from Merchant Taylor School who received the Sir John Thomson Memorial Sword from Air Commodore McCafferty.

All cadets had been interviewed yesterday in the finals of their competitions in a “Dragon’s Den” style scenario at RAF College Cranwell. Nominees from each region were put under intense questioning by a panel of judges to find the winners.

The latter were joined at the awards event by other high achievers including the best ATC sportswoman and sportsman of the year, Cpl Maisie Smith and Sgt Levi Sweeney.

A first this year and marking the RAF centenary was the RAF100 Sword which was presented to Flt Lt Liam Waring of 1936 (Newton) Squadron.

Liam was awarded the sword for his outstanding performance at the RAF Air Cadets’ Squadron Commanders’ Course.

The course is run at the RAFAC’s Adult Training Facility at RAF Cranwell for volunteer officers who command the ATC squadrons.
