Shooting for success

03 Jul 2018

It was a record breaking year for the RAF Air cadets and staff who descended on Cambridge for the Cadet Forces National clay target competition.

The ATC air cadets bagged a massive 8 gold medals; 2 silver medals and 2 bronze medals out of eleven events. The results are the best yet for the organisation.

16-year-old Cadet Mitchell Orme from 1740 (Clydebank Squadron/ West Scotland Wing, won two gold medals and was chosen for a talent programme by the head scout from British Shooting; John Offord.

Nearly 200 cadets and staff from the Army Cade Force, RAF Air Cadets and the Combined Cadet Force gathered at Cambridge shooting ground to compete in the two-day championships which consisted of a 50 target sporting, 25 target down the line and a 60 target flush.

The competition was founded in 2007 with the intention of offering all UK cadets an opportunity to compete in a sport that has full Olympic recognition, in the hope that one day the cadet movement would produce someone with the talent to represent Great Britain at the Olympics (or their home country at the Commonwealth Games).  A cadet who shot in 2014 has been selected for the England Team.

The sun shone over the weekend and the 11 RAFAC teams gave a fantastic showing against the other Open Cadet teams. Results as follows:

British Shooting had their head talent scout (John Offord) in attendance over the weekend and the High Gun from the competition will be offered access to their talent identification programme.

He spoke after the award ceremony to express his delight in being able to watch the talent and disciplines this years’ cadets produced and it is known that there were names put into his little black book.

This year’s High Gun from the competition, Cadet Orme from West Scotland Wing, was offered access to their talent identification programme.

The prizes were presented by Brigadier Matthew Lowe, Deputy Commander of the ACF. As well as the RAFAC Teams involved, RAFAC personnel carried out the planning, organisation and running of the event.

Squadron Leader Allan White, Clay Target Training Officer, said: “I am most proud of the cadets from all the services that were able to come together and engage in a sporting competition with great enthusiasm.

“I am totally impressed with the level of disciplined gun handling and safety which was demonstrated by the cadets over the weekend - an example to all.

“For Cadet Orme (and another CCF Cadet) the Talent Identification Pathway will allow him the opportunity to develop his shooting further with support and guidance from British Shooting.
