Rock Climbing Skills

This foundation course introduces candidates to the techniques of lead climbing on single and multi-pitch routes. You’ll spend five days engaged in strenuous physical activity, so make sure you’re fit before applying. In the evening there are additional lectures.

The aim is for candidates to gain sufficient climbing skills to enter the Rock Climbing Instructor scheme (see below) or to enhance their personal skills towards Rock Climbing Instructor  Assessment.

Prior to attending the course, you should be able to fit a harness and operate a belay plate and be able to tie the following knots:

Fig 8 on bight and rethread

Clove hitch

Stopper Knot

Rock Climbing Instructor

This award qualifies staff to run climbing and abseiling activities on cliffs / crags in the UK. Find details online by visiting the Mountain Training webpage here

Rock Climbing Instructor training

Before applying for these courses, you must register with Mountain Training, obtain a Digital logbook (DLog) and fill in your climbing experience. You will need 15 led routes which must be graded rock climbs with traditional protection,15 led routes at a climbing wall and 5 led routes which must be outdoor bolt protected sport climbs. You’ll also need to have at least 12 months experience of rock climbing and be an individual or club member of a Mountaineering Council.

Climbing Wall Instructor

This award qualifies staff to run climbing and abseiling activities on purpose built climbing walls. Find details online by visiting the Mountain Training webpage here

Climbing Wall Instructor training

Before applying for these courses, you must register with Mountain Training, obtain a Digital logbook (DLog) and fill in your climbing experience. You will need experience of visits to 3 different climbing walls on at least 15 different occasions; this must include at least one major public wall. You must also have recorded 10 led routes at Fr4 on walls.
