Information about RAF Boulmer
RAF Boulmer is situated on the Northumberland coast, approximately 30 miles north of Newcastle. This rural location is characterised by sandy beaches, ancient castles and historic market towns.
RAF Boulmer is home to Air Surveillance and Control Systems (ASACS) Force Command, and the Control and Reporting Centre (CRC) at RAF Boulmer compiles the Recognised Air Picture within UK and NATO airspace, as well as providing tactical control of the UK Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) Force.
The School of Aerospace Battle Management (SABM) is also based at RAF Boulmer. It delivers initial training to all officers and airmen joining the Operations Support (ABM) branch, as well as providing AMB training to joint and international audiences.
RAF Boulmer is also home to ‘A’ Flight 202 Squadron – 2 Search and Rescue Sea King helicopters providing cover from Fife in the north to Hartlepool in the south, and from the Lake District in the west to as far as Norway in the east.
RAF Boulmer is in a beautiful part of the country, with fantastic surrounding countryside. Many tourists visit the area, during the summer months particularly, with Alnwick Castle and Garden, the Northumberland coast and the Northumberland National Park being among the many attractions. The region offers much to those interested in wildlife and outdoor pursuits. Major shopping centres, cinemas, bowling alleys and nightlife are some distance from the unit – having your own transport is very useful. However, the vibrant city of Newcastle has much to offer, Edinburgh is only an hour away by train, London less than 4, and Newcastle international airport is close by too.
