Information about RAF Valley
RAF Valley is located on the Isle of Anglesey which is situated off the northwest coast of Wales near the beautiful Snowdonia mountain range - off junction 4 of the A55. It is separated from the mainland by the Menai Strait, which is spanned by two picturesque bridges, the Menai Bridge and the Britannia Bridge. The Isle of Anglesey is an area of outstanding beauty and hugs the coast of North Wales and boasts over 100 miles of spectacular coastline with many blue flag beaches. It is a watersports paradise with very active clubs in water-skiing, windsurfing, surfing, sailing, canoeing, angling and sub-aqua to name but a few.
The mission of the Station is One Valley – Training Aircrew and saving lives.
The largest unit based at Valley is No 4 Flying Training School, which operates Hawk T1/T1A aircraft, and incorporates the Central Flying School Advanced Training Unit. Valley is also home to "C" Flight of No 22 Squadron equipped with 2 Sea King HAR3s for Search and Rescue duties, Search and Rescue Training Unit, which operates 3 Griffin HT1s and also the Mountain Rescue Service Headquarters.
Valley is the nearest village (approximately 2 miles) offering a small range of shops,Holyhead is the nearest town (approximately 7 miles). The port of Holyhead is the busiest UK Irish ferry port, with sailings to Dublin and Dun Laoghaire. The train station is located just a few minutes walk from the town centre alongside the Stena Line Passenger Ferry Terminal. Direct trains run from Holyhead on Anglesey to Chester, Birmingham, Manchester and London.
Bangor is the nearest city (approximately 20 miles from station). Bangor a university town, is one of the smallest cities in the United Kingdom lying on the banks of the Menai Straits. Bangor is a principal shopping centre with many High Street names and a wide variety of places to eat and a good range of accommodation. Bangor is an ideal centre for the outdoor enthusiast.
